“What in the world were you thinking?” Cooper demanded an hour later as he stormed into his parents' dining room.

“Alastair!” his father said, raising his coffee cup to him. “This is a surprise. What brings you by this morning?”

Honestly, he loved his father, but he had a way of being utterly oblivious to tense situations.

Meanwhile, his mother looked positively serene. “Good morning to you,” she said. “Why don’t you sit and have some coffee? I’m sure if you asked her nicely, Annie would make you a nice omelet.”

“I’m not here for breakfast,” he said through clenched teeth. “I want to know what you were thinking by calling the wedding planners and telling them I’m getting married!”

“This again?” she said with a sigh. “You know, you’re starting to sound like a broken record. We’ve been working on this. And you just told me yesterday that you met someone!”

“Yes, met someone. Met! I thought we came to an understanding that you needed to lay off on planning any weddings for me, and the second I turn my back, you’ve got Meet Me at the Altar on speed dial!”

Her eyes narrowed at him. “And how exactly do you know this?”

This was it. Go big or go home.

“Because the woman I’m dating works for them!” he said loudly and then watched as his mother’s expression went from curious to furious.

Here we go…

“You’re…you’re dating one of the wedding planners?”

“No, she’s actually one of the bakers.”

“But…but…you said she was a friend of the bride!”

“Actually, you asked if she was and I just nodded.”

Evelyn eyed him with a frown. “A lie of omission is still a lie, Alastair.”

“And can we please quit with the Alastair?” he asked with exasperation. “The two of you are the only ones who call me that. I hate the name; I’ve always hated the name! All of my friends call me Cooper. Can you please do that for me?”

“Nonsense. You were named after your grandfather and his father before him. It’s tradition,” she told him. “And don’t try changing the subject. This is about you dating a baker.” She shuddered. “What on earth are you thinking? The head of Vandergrift Industries cannot marry a baker. It’s ridiculous and I forbid it.”

“Evelyn,” his father murmured without taking his eyes off his newspaper. “Don’t you think you’re being a bit of a snob? You raved about the cakes those girls made, and you found them all simply delightful the day of the tasting. I think you’re acting a bit rash.”

But she waved him off. “You have no idea the pressure of high society. Alastair needs a suitable wife for when he’s running the company—a girl with a good upbringing and impeccable manners. For all we know, this girl comes from a trailer park or…or…can only speak one language!”

“Oh, the horror!” Cooper mocked, hand to his chest. “Do you even hear yourself? You sound insane, Mother. Emilie is an amazing woman and I’m in love with her.”

“Since when?” Then she paused. “Wait…Emilie was the girl who served us at the tasting.
